These notes from Planner, Alasdair Pedley: This is effectively an “urban” event, with interesting Sprint sections in Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. The long legs between the two are timed out ‘transitions’. You get a fresh map for each stage. This means you can’t use the transitions to plan all your routes for the next stage. Before you head to your first start, please collect a map (as below) for the transition stages from assembly. This will be needed to navigate to your first start and for the transitions between stage finishes and the next start.

It would be a good idea to have some pockets, a bum bag, rucksack or race vest to carry your transition map and the maps you have already used. If you are continuing your run (transitioning), you need to punch a normal SI box (with the control number on it) not a start unit. The transition leg will be timed out. Please be careful because at Hebden Start and at the Mytholmroyd South Start as there will be both Start and Normal control boxes.

AT ALL START AND FINISH POINTS THERE WILL BE A MARSHALL. AT START POINTS, THEY WILL GUIDE YOUR PUNCHING AND ISSUE YOU WITH A MAP FOR YOUR NEXT STAGE. AT FINISH POINTS THEY WILL PROMPT YOU TO NAVIGATE THE TIMED OUT TRANSITION TO YOUR NEXT START WITH THE TRANSITION MAP.
PUNCH THE RIGHT SI BOXES!

At the Mytholmroyd South Finishes you will punch a Finish Box. Please continue to the Event Base at Mytholmroyd Community Centre to Download. And have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Artificial barriers will be present on the map on all courses, to make the route choice more interesting. You cannot cross these. They appear on your map as bold purple lines across a path or road.  They will not be marked in any way on the ground. It is only a local event, we’re trusting your honesty.

Terrain: Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge have the full range of Urban Orienteering features. The transition stages are mainly on the Calder Valley Greenway.

Maps: Full ISSprOM 1:4000. Mapped by Richard Payne and updated 2024 by Alasdair Pedley. Mytholmroyd A5, Hebden Bridge A4.Please note, there will be no legend on the maps. Only special features will be shown.

Entries: Through the SI Entries event page closing Wednesday 17th April. SiEntries - EPOC Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge

Day 2 of the War of the Roses Weekend, Sunday 21st April, is being hosted by our Red Rose neighbours, Pendle Forest Orienteers at Burnley East.

SiEntries - PFO Burnley (NWUL) Regional

There will be an overall combined result based on Urban Age Classes published after the Burnley Event on Sunday.

Late Entry Fees:  Senior £8.50, Young Adult (21-25) £6.00, Junior £4. There is a £1 total discount if you enter both days of the War of the Roses Weekend.

Entry on the Day: Available subject to map availability

Start: Open punching starts between 12 and 1pm. See the table above for distances to the various course starts. If there is a large entry we may extend this start window to 1.30pm

Finish: There are two finishes. The MW12- Finish is at the Event Base front door. All other courses finish 200m from the Event Base. Courses close at 2.30pm. All competitors must download, even if they do not complete the course.

Safety A comprehensive risk assessment will be carried out by the organiser. The risks associated with competing in an urban environment are significant and need to be taken seriously by all competitors who take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. Parents are particularly asked to emphasise these points with their children. Hebden Bridge is likely to be particularly busy on a saturday lunchtime.
If you have a medical condition that first aiders should know about in an emergency, please contact the organiser with details, before/at the event before your run, in confidence. These details will only be used for the purposes of this event and will be deleted/destroyed afterwards.

Insurance: Members and Non members of British Orienteering are covered by our public liability insurance.
Please ask any of our club officials for more information if you would like to join EPOC and British Orienteering.
